Three Leeds Beckett University students have been selected to join England’s women’s Rugby League team for a historic match in Las Vegas, marking a significant milestone in the sport’s effort to expand its international presence.
Bella Sykes, a second-year PE student and a player for Leeds Rhinos, along with Leeds Beckett alumni Tamzin Renouf from York Valkyrie and Keara Bennett, also from Leeds Rhinos, are part of the 20-player squad set to face the reigning world champions, Australia, in the upcoming match on March 1.
This selection is a testament to the success of Leeds Beckett’s Talented Athlete Scholarship Scheme (TASS), which has been instrumental in nurturing top-tier athletes. The program provides student-athletes with access to world-class coaching, elite performance facilities, and comprehensive support in nutrition, strength conditioning, and sports psychology, ensuring they are well-prepared for both national and international competitions.
Bella Sykes, a second-year PE student and a player for Leeds Rhinos said:
“I’m super happy and grateful. I told myself work hard and just see what happens, so I am just really happy. The camp been really good. Even today when it has been tough, everyone has got around each other, congratulated those that did get in and put their arms around those that didn’t.”
Keara Bennett, a player for Leeds Rhinos added:
“It is always an honour to play for your country, but to go and play against the world champs is going to be incredible’ while centre Tamzin Renouf says she is ‘really excited ‘after ‘a tough couple of months…I am really glad the hard work paid off.”
The inclusion of these three athletes in the England squad highlights the university’s significant contribution to the sport and its development of players who can perform on the world stage. The game in Las Vegas is not just a regular match but a part of a larger festival of Rugby League, aimed at introducing the sport to the American market. This event will also feature matches involving top men’s club teams from New Zealand and England, showcasing the global appeal and competitive nature of Rugby League.
England captain Jodie Cunningham said:
“Leeds Beckett is basically our home – we’ve been lucky enough to be based here for a while now. These are world class facilities that we are really fortunate enough to get access to, and that allows us to be world class at what we do.”
Sean Scantlebury, head of performance at England Women’s RL and research fellow at Leeds Beckett University said:
“The partnership between England and Leeds Beckett gives us a performance hub and state-of-the-art facilities to compete and showcase our ability on a huge stage. Rugby league is fast-paced, hard-hitting and athletic – everything US audiences love.”
