Leeds Libraries to Update Opening Hours After Public Feedback

Several of Leeds’s libraries are set to have their opening hours adjusted following a public consultation.

The survey was conducted to assess how libraries are utilized throughout the city and to explore ways to alleviate the financial pressures facing the council. Libraries and community hubs, which serve as vital resources for the residents, were evaluated to determine how costs could be minimized with minimal impact on the community. Nearly 3,000 people participated in the consultation, providing feedback on their usage of libraries and community hubs.

Starting in August, some locations will experience reduced hours in the evenings, and others will have shorter operational hours on Saturdays than previously. However, many sites will maintain their current schedules. These adjustments in opening hours are expected to generate savings of approximately £200,000, contributing to the council’s broader goal of cutting £63.9 million from its budget this fiscal year.

Leeds boasts 37 libraries and community hubs, offering more than just books and complimentary computer access. These centers are cultural hotspots featuring author talks, creative workshops, and numerous events tailored for families and children. Holding a library card grants access to a wealth of online resources and information. Additionally, cardholders can request any book from the catalogue to be delivered to any location for free pickup.

The Leeds Central Library stands out with its specialty departments, hosting the largest public art and music collections in Northern England. It also features Studio 12, an award-winning digital media studio for individuals aged 16-30, a comprehensive local and family history library containing over 180,000 items, and a business and information department that offers free support to both new and established businesses.

Community hubs provide essential services, assisting with job applications, budget management, and accessing entitlements. In 2023, Leeds introduced ‘wellbeing pods’ in eight of its libraries or hubs. These pods provide parents and families with access to local midwives and healthcare professionals, enhancing community support.

Councillor Mary Harland, Leeds City Council’s executive member for communities, customer service and community safety said:

“Community hubs and libraries offer a significant face to face, community-based response to supporting families and residents, particularly those experiencing poverty, as well as making sure we have a library function in the city. They really are valuable spaces to people of all ages.

“Given the financial position we’re in, we’ve had to investigate ways of making savings in all our services. Of the options considered, reducing opening hours on evenings and Saturdays in some sites was the one that would have the least impact on people using these spaces, whilst enabling the service to continue to run effectively and efficiently.”

Leeds Libraries are more than just buildings filled with books; they are vibrant cultural hubs scattered across the city, each offering an array of services that cater to the needs of the community. With 37 locations, including community hubs, Leeds Libraries provide residents with access to a wealth of resources that extend far beyond traditional book lending.

Leeds Libraries play a pivotal role in the cultural landscape of the city. They host an impressive lineup of events throughout the year, including author talks, creative workshops, and engaging activities designed specifically for children and families. These programs not only enrich the community’s cultural experience but also foster a love of reading and learning among participants of all ages.

In today’s digital age, Leeds Libraries adapt by offering extensive digital services. A library card unlocks access to thousands of online resources, from eBooks and eMagazines to specialized databases that would otherwise cost individual users a substantial subscription fee. Furthermore, patrons can request any book from the extensive catalogue to be delivered to their nearest library location for pick-up at no additional charge.

The Leeds Central Library, located in the heart of the city, is particularly noteworthy. It houses the largest and most comprehensive public art and music libraries in the north of England. The facility is also home to Studio 12, an award-winning digital media studio that supports young creatives aged 16-30. Additionally, it features a local and family history library with over 180,000 items and a business and information department that provides invaluable support to local entrepreneurs and businesses.

Leeds Libraries also serve as community hubs that help residents with various needs, such as job applications, budgeting, and navigating government benefits. In 2023, the libraries launched “wellbeing pods” in eight locations, offering direct support from healthcare professionals like midwives, which underscores the libraries’ role in promoting community health and wellbeing.

Whether you’re a student, a professional, a parent, or simply someone looking to engage more with your community, Leeds Libraries offer something for everyone. Their continued evolution and commitment to serving the diverse needs of Leeds’ residents ensure that the libraries remain relevant and vital to the community’s fabric.
