Statement by leader of Leeds City Council Cllr Judith Blake regarding Josh Warrington world title win
Josh Warrington stuns Lee Selby to win IBF world featherweight title.
Josh Warrington made history by becoming the first man from Leeds to win a world boxing title with a stunning split-decision upset victory over Wales’ Lee Selby.
Josh Warrington is a British professional boxer who has held the IBF featherweight title since 2018. He has previously held the WBC International, European, British, Commonwealth and English featherweight titles.
Warrington was a clear underdog with the bookmakers against his Welsh opponent but rose to the challenge in the West Yorkshire cauldron to maintain his perfect professional record and end Selby’s near three-year reign as world champion at 126lbs.
Warrington is ranked as the second best featherweight in the UK and the sixth best featherweight in the world by BoxRec as of May 2018.
Leader of Leeds City Council Councillor Judith Blake, said:
“On behalf of the city, I would like to offer Josh huge congratulations on becoming Leeds’s first boxing world champion after his sensational performance at Elland Road on Saturday.
“Not only is Josh a fantastic boxer, he is also someone who offers his support and gives his time to many initiatives in the city, which is tremendous. Saturday’s achievement is a reward for Josh’s hard work, commitment and dedication over many years.”
