Leeds Prepares for a Spectacular Summer of Sports Events

Leeds is gearing up for a summer packed with major sporting events, set to enhance its reputation as one of the UK’s premier sports capitals.

Thousands of amateur athletes will participate in various activities, including runs and bike rides, contributing to the city’s rising national and international profile and boosting its economy. Sports enthusiasts are also in for a treat, with plans to visit iconic venues like Headingley Cricket Ground and Elland Road, which will host an exciting lineup of top-tier professional sports. All participants, whether competitors, organizers, or fans, are promised an engaging and inclusive experience that highlights the very best Leeds has to offer.

Leeds is set to host a series of prominent sporting events this summer, featuring:

Leeds 10K, June 23, 2024 The popular annual 10K, first held in 2007, is returning this summer. Organized by the not-for-profit Run For All, with support from Leeds City Council, the event will take place on Sunday, June 23. Over 5,000 participants are expected to race from the University of Leeds’s Parkinson Steps to the finish line outside Leeds Art Gallery.

Legacy Ride, July 7, 2024 Celebrating the 10th anniversary of Yorkshire’s Tour de France Grand Depart, this mass cycling event will guide participants through the picturesque Yorkshire Dales. The ride starts and ends at Leeds’s Roundhay Park on Sunday, July 7. This event is managed by Struggle Events with support from Leeds City Council and sponsorship from Axiologik.

UK Corporate Games, July 25-28, 2024 The UK Corporate Games, Europe’s largest multi-sport festival for businesses, will be held in Leeds. This event was secured through a joint bid by Leeds City Council and the University of Leeds. It will feature thousands of competitors from various companies, engaging in over 20 sports ranging from badminton and basketball to tennis and ten-pin bowling.

These events not only enhance Leeds’ reputation as a sporting hub but also offer engaging opportunities for both participants and spectators alike. May features a highlight event with the second Rob Burrow Leeds Marathon set for Sunday, May 12. Organized by Run For All and supported by Leeds City Council, this marathon aims to raise funds for various charitable causes.

In April, Leeds made sporting history by hosting its first-ever international ice hockey match. The event saw Great Britain secure a 3-1 victory over Poland on April 26, with a full house of 2,000 spectators at the Planet Ice Leeds venue, located adjacent to Elland Road.

Henry Staelens, Chief Executive Officer of Ice Hockey UK said:

“It was great to play in front of a sold-out crowd in Leeds. Taking Great Britain around the UK is one of our core aims and it was fantastic to see so many new faces at the game. I’d like to thank everyone involved in making the night such a success.”

Leeds has significantly enhanced its stature as a sports capital through prestigious events like the AJ Bell World Triathlon Championship Series and the Westfield Health British Transplant Games, as well as hosting matches during the 2022 Rugby League World Cup.

These high-profile events not only elevate the city’s visibility but also stimulate economic activity. For instance, the UK Corporate Games are anticipated to inject over £2 million into the local economy. Similarly, the 2014 Tour de France Grand Depart had a profound impact, boosting Yorkshire’s economy by over £100 million and setting the stage for subsequent increases in tourism and trade.

Furthermore, Leeds City Council collaborates with event organizers to ensure that these large-scale events align with sustainability practices, supporting the city’s goals to achieve net zero emissions.

Councillor Jonathan Pryor, Leeds City Council’s deputy leader and executive member for economy, culture and education said:

“Leeds is a city that is famously passionate about sport and also one that relishes the opportunity to stage major events of all kinds. Both of these traits will be in evidence this summer as we host the Leeds 10K, Legacy Ride, UK Corporate Games and much, much more.

“Everyone attending or competing can expect to enjoy the sort of inclusive, welcoming and vibrant atmosphere that Leeds does best. As someone who took part in last year’s inaugural Rob Burrow Leeds Marathon and will be running it again this weekend, I know just how impressive the city looks and feels on these big days. They really do bring people together and provide a wonderful advert for Leeds.”

This year, Headingley is set to host several significant cricket matches, including the England men’s team playing against Pakistan on May 22 and Australia on September 21. Additionally, the England Women’s cricket team will compete against Pakistan Women at the same venue on May 19. In the realm of rugby, Elland Road will be the venue for the 2024 Magic Weekend on August 17 and 18, showcasing a full slate of Rugby League matches.
