Important Voter Information for Leeds Residents Ahead of the General Election.
As the general election approaches on Thursday, July 4, residents of Leeds who plan to vote should take note of essential dates and procedures. With campaigning in full swing, it is crucial for all voters to understand the steps required for participation. The initial and most critical step is voter registration. The deadline to register is midnight on Tuesday, June 18. This is particularly important for those who have recently moved and need to update their registration to a new address. Voter registration is a quick process, taking just about five minutes, and can be completed online at the Register to Vote section on the GOV.UK
If you’re considering voting by postal vote for the upcoming election and haven’t yet arranged this, be aware that the deadline to apply is 5pm on Wednesday, June 19. You can submit your application through the official website at www.gov.uk/apply-postal-vote. Should you need to modify your existing voting arrangements, you must do so by the same deadline. This can be accomplished by sending an email to electors@leeds.gov.uk.
For those who prefer to vote by proxy, applications must be submitted by 5pm on Wednesday, June 26. To apply, please visit www.gov.uk/apply-proxy-vote. Ensure your application is in before this deadline to secure your proxy vote for the election.
For the first time, all individuals voting in person at polling stations during the upcoming general election will be required to show Voter ID. Detailed guidance on the acceptable forms of identification and instructions on how to apply for a new free Voter ID are available at www.gov.uk/voting-photo-id. Community hubs and libraries across Leeds are equipped to assist voters with the application process, including taking the necessary photographs. The deadline to apply for a Voter Authority Certificate, which serves as free Voter ID, is 5pm on Wednesday, June 26.
Voters should also note that due to recent boundary changes, the names of several parliamentary constituencies in and around Leeds have been altered. These changes will be reflected in the constituencies available for selection in the upcoming general election.

The list of candidates running for MP in the seven Leeds constituencies will be available after 4pm on Friday, June 7. Details can be viewed online at Leeds City Council’s Election page. Poll cards will be sent to all registered voters in Leeds starting Monday, June 3. Voters are urged to check the details on their poll cards upon receipt to verify accuracy and to note any changes to their polling station locations.
For those registered to vote by mail, postal poll cards will be dispatched, followed by the postal ballot packs, which are scheduled to be sent out starting Wednesday, June 19. Voters are encouraged to carefully review the information provided in the materials they receive, particularly regarding the new regulations about submitting completed postal votes or voting on behalf of others. To facilitate efficient processing and manage demand, postal voters are urged to return their completed postal vote packs through Royal Mail at their earliest convenience.
Acting Returning Officer and Chief Executive of Leeds City Council Tom Riordan said:
“With the general election campaign underway it is really important people in Leeds know what they need to do and by when in order to exercise their democrat right to vote and have their say.
“Voters who intend to vote in person need to be aware they must be able to show accepted ID at the polling station or they will be turned away, and we ask postal voters to send their completed packs back in good time and for everyone to carefully read the instructions on their polling information.”
