Leeds City Council has unveiled fresh images showing how Dawsons Corner is expected to look after major upgrade works, with the scheme aimed at cutting congestion, improving safety and making journeys easier for all road users.
Leeds City Council has unveiled new images showing how Dawsons Corner is expected to look once major improvement works at the busy junction are finished. The visuals offer the clearest view yet of the planned transformation at one of the city’s most recognisable transport gateways, where a major upgrade is now started. The scheme is designed to cut congestion, improve safety and provide better routes for motorists, pedestrians and cyclists.
Dawsons Corner connects the A647 Stanningley Road with the A6120 Ring Road, making it one of the most important junctions in the city’s road network. Every day, around 57,000 vehicles pass through the area, alongside about 1,200 pedestrians and cyclists, underlining the need for long-term improvements.
Work on the scheme began in May 2025 and forms part of Leeds City Council’s wider Connecting Leeds transport strategy. The programme is designed to maintain and improve the city’s Inner and Outer Ring Roads, helping to support future growth while also delivering smoother and more reliable journeys.
The newly released visuals show how the junction is expected to operate once the works are finished, offering residents, commuters and local businesses a glimpse of the long-term changes planned for the area. The council says the scheme is intended to tackle long-standing traffic issues at Dawsons Corner while also making the junction safer and more accessible for everyone using it.
As work continues, drivers are being advised to plan ahead during periods of traffic management and road closures linked to key stages of the project. Access to important local destinations, including New Pudsey train station and Owlcotes Shopping Centre, will be maintained during planned disruption, with signed diversions in place where needed.
Council leaders say the investment in Dawsons Corner will play an important role in keeping Leeds moving, improving one of the main routes into and around the city, and helping the road network cope with future demand.
Leeds City Council’s deputy leader and executive member for economy, transport and sustainable development, Councillor Jonathan Pryor said:
“I am delighted to share the new visualisation of Dawsons Corner, which reveals a transformed, enlarged junction layout, making it better and safer for all road users.
“The need to improve the junction is a major priority. It’s important not only to improve traffic flow and air quality, but also to support essential links to future housing growth and developments, and for people to be able to access jobs more easily with consistent travel times.
“It is pleasing to see that the works are progressing to the planned schedule, with the next major phase earmarked to take place over 24–27 April. We are keeping residents and businesses regularly updated on progress and have set up a website with information about the project, along with plans and timescales. Local residents and businesses are engaged about the works, so they understand how the construction works may affect them.
“We appreciate the works will lead to some disruption and recognise that it takes time to adjust to such a major change. We thank businesses, residents and bus operators for their patience, and we look forward to the long-term benefits once the scheme is completed.”
Once complete, the upgraded junction is expected to bring lasting benefits for all road users, while helping to modernise a key part of Leeds’ transport infrastructure. The Dawsons Corner upgrade is scheduled to be completed in early 2027.
