Candlelighters Easter Appeal 2022 we bring light and hope to the families of children suffering from cancer

As we approach Easter, we know that lots of our fabulous supporters like to collect and donate Easter eggs for children currently in hospital.

This gesture, while kind, often means we are inundated with surplus eggs! This year, we’re asking our supporters to consider instead donating the cost of one or two eggs to our Candlelighters Easter Appeal, to help us fund other support for children in hospital such as crafts and activities, play leader roles, and our family support team. This way, we can make sure we have all the resources we need to make the hospital a fun and happy environment around Easter.

Even a donation of a few pounds would be so appreciated; days in hospital can be long and repetitive, so funding our other areas of support is absolutely essential. Don’t worry, we’ll make sure all the children staying in hospital will get an Easter egg! Making a donation simply means that we’re able to allocate much-needed resources in other areas which will help to make the hospital a more enjoyable environment and ensure children and families are well supported

We get involved in all sorts of different projects to help ordinary families who are facing extraordinary circumstances. Candlelighters is a big family where everybody has an important role to play. Here are some of the people who help make it all happen. Our values are very important to us. They’re what we believe in, what we stand by and what makes us who we are.

Established in 1976, Candlelighters is a charity formed and run by parents of children who have or have had cancer, ex-patients and the medical staff who treat them. Based in Yorkshire, Candlelighters provides essential services and support to children with cancer and their families.

When a child is diagnosed with cancer, lives are turned upside down in an instant. Not just for the child but for their parents, grandparents, siblings, friends and extended family. Priorities change, everyday concerns suddenly seem trivial and a future once so bright and so full of hope can appear bleak and daunting. Getting well again can be a long and challenging journey, physically, emotionally and even financially. Helping and supporting those children and their families throughout that journey is why Candlelighters was formed more than 40 years ago and it is why we are still here.

Because Candlelighters was founded by, and is still run by, parents of children who have or have had cancer and the medical staff who treat them, we understand the trauma and the turmoil of that diagnosis and how the support and care needed may differ from family to family.

So, whether it be through the support of the friendly staff and experienced counsellors, that ‘home away from home’ environment we nurture on the ward in Leeds or the vital research into new treatments and cures we fund, we are here to help.
