A new playground is coming to Oak Road Recreation Ground in the New Wortley area of Armley, commonly referred to as Jailey Fields.
This development, featuring climbing structures and an agility play trail, comes in response to community requests. Following a successful funding application, Leeds City Council has confirmed the construction of the playground. The planned playground will offer a variety of play equipment suitable for different age groups, including swings, a slide, climbing structures, an agility trail, and a see-saw. Enhancements will also be made to the existing youth shelter, and new benches will be installed. Additionally, to foster environmental education, a nature trail will be introduced to help children learn about local wildlife.
Many residents in the New Wortley area of Armley lack direct access to outdoor spaces such as yards or gardens, making Oak Road Recreation Ground a vital green space and multi-use games area for the community. Despite its utility, there has been a strong community push for a dedicated playground, as some residents have pointed out that ‘for us, play means jumping in the car.’
In response, the summer of 2023 saw council officers and community groups come together to engage with local residents and develop a design for a new play area. This space is intended to provide a gathering place for children and families. After successfully obtaining funding from the Veolia Environmental Trust, which operates under the Landfill Communities Fund, construction of the new playground is scheduled to commence this Autumn.
Councillor Mohammed Rafique, Leeds City Council’s executive member for climate, energy, environment and green space said:
“Through our Child Friendly Leeds programme we are constantly striving to make Leeds the best city in the UK for children to grow up in. One of the core pillars of that strategy is for children and young people have safe spaces to play, hang out and have fun.
“New Wortley has been waiting a long time for a dedicated play area so we’re very pleased to have secured this funding. We want to ensure that wherever you live in Leeds, children have access to green spaces and opportunities to play. The addition of a playground in Oak Road Recreation Ground is another step in the right direction.”
