Rothwell Mum Brings Families Together Through New Intergenerational French Classes

As new research highlights a growing trend of grandparents supporting their grandchildren’s extracurricular pursuits, one Rothwell mum is creating a unique space for families to bond through language.

Ellie Tolan, a Rothwell local with French heritage and a deep love for cultural exchange, has launched a series of intergenerational French classes aimed at parents, grandparents, and children under five. The sessions are designed to be playful and relaxed, encouraging families to learn together without pressure — building not just vocabulary, but shared memories across generations.

The launch of Ellie Tolan’s intergenerational French classes comes at a time when more families are turning to grandparents for help funding enrichment activities, according to new research from the Institute of Children’s Activity Providers (ICAP). With the cost of living on the rise, families are prioritising activities that offer lasting value. At the same time, a YouGov poll reveals that only 21% of UK adults can hold a conversation in a language other than their mother tongue.

Of those who can’t, nearly half say they regret not engaging more with languages at school — and over half expressed a keen interest in picking up a new language. Language learning is no longer just about exams or school targets. More families are embracing it as a way to boost confidence, deepen cultural understanding, and unlock future opportunities. Ellie’s classes are designed with that vision in mind.

Raised in a bilingual household by a French mother from La Rochelle and an English father, Ellie grew up immersed in two cultures — spending summers on the French coast and later studying French and Management at Leeds University. A year-long placement in her beloved La Rochelle cemented her connection to her heritage. Now settled in West Yorkshire, Ellie is bringing her passion full circle, helping families connect through the joy of language.

“When my youngest started school, I wanted a fresh challenge,” says Ellie. “I thought about retraining, but then realised — I already had something valuable to offer. I’ve seen firsthand how languages spark joy, curiosity, and opportunity. Why not share that with others?”

Children Singing and having Fun

That spark inspired the creation of French with Ellie, a lively language club where children, parents, and grandparents come together to learn in a warm, welcoming setting. The sessions are based on the award-winning La Jolie Ronde programme, a trusted early years curriculum developed by language and education experts.

Blending songs, stories, and structured play, the approach offers a gentle, joyful way for young children to absorb French naturally. With the support of parents and grandparents learning alongside them, little ones gain confidence, and families share in the experience of discovery together.

A key part of the experience is Bonbon the cuddly bear, who helps bring the language to life. “The use of toys and puppets is really powerful at this age,” says Ellie. “Bonbon helps the children feel at ease and engaged. They’re learning without even realising it.”

La Jolie Ronde blends fun with rigour, offering a solid foundation in French while sparking a lifelong love of languages. For Ellie, it’s about more than just vocabulary — it’s about building connection. “The classes are interactive and playful, and they’re a great way to meet others in the community. There’s no pressure — just progress, fun, and friendship.”

To celebrate the launch of her new intergenerational French classes, Ellie is offering a free 45-minute taster session on Monday 9 June at 2:15pm at Rothwell Baptist Church.

All are welcome — parents, grandparents, and little ones under five. It’s the perfect chance to experience the fun, relaxed atmosphere for yourself.
