Lord Mayor of Leeds to Host Festive Fundraiser to Support Community Equality

The Lord Mayor of Leeds, Councillor Abigail Marshall Katung, is preparing to host a special festive fundraiser in support of the Leeds Community Foundation.

Since aligning with Leeds Community Foundation in May, Councillor Katung has been actively working to enhance public understanding of the foundation’s crucial role. Leeds Community Foundation stands as a pivotal force in fostering community development and equity across Leeds. As an independent grant-making entity, the Foundation excels in bringing together various organizations and individuals to channel investments into local communities, aiming to build a more inclusive and fair society.

Since its inception, Leeds Community Foundation has dedicated itself to identifying and addressing the most pressing challenges faced by Leeds’ diverse populations. The Foundation focuses on supporting initiatives that tackle issues such as health inequalities, educational disparities, and economic development, ensuring that the benefits of growth are shared across all sectors of the community.

The organization operates on the principle that strong, well-funded local groups are the cornerstone of a vibrant and resilient community. Through its strategic grant-making, Leeds Community Foundation has enabled numerous grassroots organizations to launch and expand services that have a direct and positive impact on residents’ lives.

The funds raised during the event will be allocated as grants to community organizations deeply embedded within Leeds. This support will ensure these organizations can continue to serve their communities effectively, both now and in the future.

The Lord Mayor of Leeds, Councillor Abigail Marshall Katung

Councillor Abigail Marshall Katung, Lord Mayor of Leeds said:

“During my year in office, I’ve made a commitment to making the term ‘Fairer Leeds’ a reality for the city by addressing inequalities that sadly still exist. Leeds Community Foundation is a grant giving organisation doing an incredible job ploughing money into the right places. This matches my vision and dream for Leeds to be a fairer place to live despite the challenging economic environment we’re all living through.

“I’ve been overwhelmed by how much they do for this city; so much so that Leeds Community Foundation is part of me now. I was first elected as a councillor in 2019, and again in 2023; and can see how the whole city is benefitting from the work of the Foundation. Continuing to develop these amazing collaborations will remain with me for many years and I encourage others to consider getting involved.”

Leeds Community Foundation also plays a critical role in fostering collaboration among charities, businesses, and local government. By facilitating partnerships and dialogues, the Foundation ensures that resources are effectively pooled to address complex social issues more comprehensively. This collaborative approach not only amplifies the impact of individual efforts but also encourages a culture of mutual support and cooperation.

Steph Taylor, CEO of Leeds Community Foundation added:

“I’d like to extend our sincere thanks to Councillor Abigail Marshall Katung, Lord Mayor of Leeds, for her continued support. We are aligned in our shared vision to build a fairer Leeds and will continue to work tirelessly to ensure that vital funds are raised and distributed across our city.”

The Lord Mayor of Leeds Festive Ball 2024 is set to be a dazzling highlight of the city’s social calendar, taking place at the majestic Royal Armouries on Saturday, December 7th. This annual event not only promises an evening of elegance and entertainment but also supports a noble cause, with proceeds going towards local community initiatives through the Leeds Community Foundation.

This year’s ball, themed ‘A Winter’s Gala’, will feature a spectacular array of festive decorations and a lineup of top-tier entertainment designed to captivate guests throughout the night. Attendees can look forward to a sumptuous banquet, live music performances ranging from classical to contemporary, and a variety of acts that will add a touch of magic to the winter evening.

The Lord Mayor, Councillor Abigail Marshall Katung, will host the event, emphasizing the city’s commitment to fostering a fairer and more inclusive Leeds. In her address, she is expected to highlight the key achievements and ongoing efforts of the Leeds Community Foundation in tackling issues such as health inequality, digital exclusion, and food poverty across the city.

Tickets for the ball are available online, offering individuals and businesses a chance to partake in this glamorous event. Beyond an evening of entertainment, ticket holders contribute directly to the well-being of their community, as funds raised will be used to support locally-rooted organizations through grants. These grants help ensure that these vital groups can continue their work in the community, not just during the holiday season, but throughout the year.

The Lord Mayor’s Festive Ball is more than just a social event; it is a celebration of the spirit of Leeds — a city united by a commitment to kindness and community support.
