Young cyclists get new learn-to-ride bike park at Temple Newsam

Young cyclists can build their confidence and learn how to ride safely at a new bike park and playground which has opened at Temple Newsam’s golf club.

The park, believed to be the first of its kind in Leeds, has been designed to recreate features of real road layouts, giving children the chance to practise cycling in a safe and controlled environment. Young riders can take on a range of fun challenges, including traffic lights, give-way lines and a level crossing, while developing their riding skills and learning how to recognise and respond to road signs. Open to children of all ages and abilities, the new facility also features its own stone hump bridge, inspired by the real stone bridge within the historic grounds of Temple Newsam.

Visitors to Temple Newsam’s golf club can now enjoy a brand new adventure playground alongside the recently opened bike park. Designed for children of all ages and abilities, the playground includes a toddler sandpit, an adventure trail and a climbing forest, offering a range of activities for families to enjoy.

Wildflower meadows have also been created nearby, with additional trees and bushes planted around the play area to support wildlife and boost biodiversity. The improvements to the golf and activity park include a new community café serving light bites and drinks, with a patio area overlooking the grounds.

Set within Temple Newsam’s historic parkland, the golf club features two nine-hole courses and is well connected to walking routes, open green space and woodland paths.

Councillor James Gibson, Leeds City Council’s executive member for environment said:

“We’re thrilled to be expanding this part of Temple Newsam’s grounds to provide a full family experience alongside the golf course. The bike park is such a fun and unique place for children to enjoy themselves and also practice their skills and learn a little bit about traffic signs.

“Along with the playground and the new café this will be a great new space for the community to meet up and spend time together.

“We’re proud of all that Temple Newsam has to offer with the lovely home farm and the play barn that opened last year as well – it all makes a brilliant day out.”

Temple Newsam Golf and Activity Park offers a welcoming outdoor space for golf, play and exercise within the historic parkland of Temple Newsam. The site combines its popular golf course with new family-friendly facilities, creating more opportunities for visitors, families and the local community to enjoy the area.

From a round of golf or a stop at the community café to exploring the new play and cycling areas, the park provides a place for fresh air, activity and simple outdoor fun www.museumsandgalleries.leeds.gov.uk
