Little explorers are being promised an out-of-this-world adventure as a spectacular new exhibition opens at Leeds Central Library, inviting families to travel from the far reaches of space to the depths of the ocean floor — all through the power of storytelling.
Story Explorers, a free, immersive experience running from February 19 to May 30, 2026, features eye-catching centrepieces including a giant cuddly octopus and a striking model of the moon, designed to spark curiosity and encourage children to dive into books in a whole new way.
Co-produced with the British Library, the exhibition offers visitors the chance to step into a series of imaginative worlds where they can read, play, craft and create. Families will be able to explore a collection of weird and wonderful objects selected from, and inspired by — the collections of Leeds Libraries, Leeds Museums and Galleries, and the British Library.

Councillor Asghar Khan, Leeds City Council’s executive member for communities, customer services and community safety said:
“It’s wonderful to be giving young readers the chance to explore whole new worlds of storytelling and to immerse themselves in these spectacular additions to the library.
“Reading has a unique ability to expand young minds and imaginations, and working alongside the British Library, this innovative exhibition is helping us to encourage young people to explore the library and its collections in a different and exciting ways.”
Kenn Taylor, Senior Culture Manager North at the British Library said:
“We are thrilled to be bringing Story Explorers to Leeds Central Library. Our collaboration with Leeds Libraries is part of the British Library’s wider commitment to the region, from our site at Boston Spa to working closely with local partners and communities in Leeds.
“Libraries are really special places, providing young readers with the opportunity to discover stories from all over the world. We hope Story Explorers becomes part of that wonderous journey of discovery.”

Alongside books, the exhibition also includes sound recordings from the British Library Sound Archive, as well as an activity table where young visitors can draw, make and invent their own stories. A temporary mini children’s library next to the exhibition will allow families to browse and borrow, extending the joy of reading beyond the exhibition space.
Organisers say the event is designed to be as practical as it is inspiring, with family-friendly facilities available on site including a free buggy park and baby changing units, helping to make the visit as smooth as possible for parents and carers.
