Unleash Your Inner Superhero to Support the Lord Mayor of Leeds Charity Appeal

Leeds residents are being invited to unleash their inner superhero and put their secret superpowers to good use as the Lord Mayor of Leeds Charity Appeal’s ‘Just One Day’ returns on Friday 13 February.

Now in its ninth year, ‘Just One Day’ encourages people to give whatever time they can spare — whether that’s an hour, an afternoon or a full day, to take part in fun activities and raise money for the Lord Mayor’s chosen charity. This year, the Lord Mayor, Councillor Dan Cohen, has selected Leeds Mencap as the appeal’s beneficiary. The local, independent charity supports children and young people with learning disabilities, autism and other additional needs, helping them feel valued, supported and equipped to thrive www.leedsmencap.org.uk

In recognition of Leeds Mencap’s vital work across the city, the theme for this year’s campaign is ‘Unleash Your Inner Superhero’, celebrating the unique strengths often associated with autism. There are no rules on how to fundraise, and events do not have to take place on 13 February — activities can be held at any point throughout the year. Whether it’s wearing fancy dress at work or school, organising a sponsored event, or hosting a bake-off, all ideas are welcome and the more fun, the better.

Lord Mayor of Leeds Charity Appeal’s Just One Day

The Lord Mayor of Leeds, Councillor Dan Cohen said:

“Just One Day is an incredible event that provides the opportunity for everyone in Leeds to come together, get creative with fundraising ideas and have some fun, whilst also raising money for a fantastic cause.

“Every penny raised will allow the Leeds Mencap to continue their vital work in supporting children and young people with learning disabilities, autism and other complex needs across our wonderful city.

“Whether you decide to organise an event or donate, please spread the word about the important work of this incredible charity. I can’t thank you enough for your support.”

The Lord Mayor’s Charity Appeal has again partnered with Child Friendly Leeds to support schools across the city, offering a comprehensive package of play plans, lesson ideas and assembly activities so pupils can get involved, raise money and learn at the same time. The campaign theme also reflects Child Friendly Leeds’ work to ensure every child and young person feels included and valued — something children themselves have highlighted as important, saying that celebrating differences and being listened to really matters.

Individuals and organisations of all sizes are being encouraged to take part and help raise vital funds for Leeds Mencap’s work. Supporters can also share their fundraising stories on social media by tagging @LordMayorLeeds on 𝕏 or using #JustOneDay2026.
