Finalists Named for the 2024 Yorkshire and Humberside Family Business Awards

The finalists for the third annual Yorkshire and Humberside Family Business Awards have been announced, ending the anticipation.

Applications came from every part of the Yorkshire and Humberside region for the awards ceremony set for Friday, November 22nd. Among the numerous entries, 40 outstanding businesses and individuals have been selected as finalists. The Yorkshire and Humberside Family Business Awards, organized by The Family Business Community, honor family-operated firms across the region, celebrating their achievements and successes.

Sue Howorth, Co-Founder of The Family Business Community said:

“With these awards now established in the regions calendar we are seeing some strong contenders, and we cannot wait to shine a light on some of the fantastic businesses and their teams in this year’s awards.”

Family-owned businesses are a cornerstone of the UK economy, with more than 5 million such enterprises across the country. Together, they employ about 50% of the private sector workforce, underscoring their significant role in economic contributions.

Dave Clarkson, Co-Founder of The Family Business Community said:

“Family businesses come in all shapes and sizes, and we feel it is vitally important to represent them as a sector in their own right. From micro businesses to multi-generational companies that have been operating for hundreds of years, we’re looking forward to a real celebration at this November’s awards.”

Selena Kearvall, Senior Vice President of Marsh Commercial who has sponsored the Manufacturing award and one of our judges this year said:

“I am thrilled and honoured to be a part of the judging panel for the Yorkshire & Humberside Family Business Awards. Having worked closely with family-run businesses throughout my career, I understand the resilience, passion, and dedication that these enterprises bring to their communities. It’s truly inspiring to witness their outstanding achievements and contributions. I look forward to celebrating the success demonstrated by family businesses operating within the region and good luck to all the finalists.”

Annette Ritson, Managing Director of Net* Development and a judge for the Awards, shared her team’s enthusiasm for supporting the event. She noted that their involvement stems from the Awards’ strong alignment with their company values and mission. Net Development has been a steadfast supporter of the Awards since their inception:

“As a family-oriented company ourselves, we deeply appreciate the importance of family businesses in our society. Working on the Yorkshire & Humberside Family Business Awards has been an inspiring experience, and we are thrilled to contribute to the celebration and recognition of these exceptional businesses.”

Reviewing and shortlisting the entries for this year’s Yorkshire and Humberside Family Business Awards was challenging. The judges evaluated both written submissions and conducted site visits, looking for businesses that showcase a robust business strategy, commitment to top-tier service, solid business processes, and sustainable practices.

This year, there were fourteen award categories, including sector-specific categories, Employee of the Year, and the People’s Choice Award. The latter combines public votes with judges’ scores to determine the winner.
