Exciting Plans to Transform Leeds Town Hall into a Premier Concert and Event Venue

Music enthusiasts and concertgoers have received an exciting preview of the transformative designs set to revitalize the concert and event spaces at the historic Leeds Town Hall.

Newly released artist impressions showcase the forthcoming enhancements, including a revamped entrance, box office, and bar, which aim to rejuvenate the iconic Victorian landmark once renovations are complete. Developed by architects Page/Park and NPS Leeds, these images highlight a critical stage in the significant, generational project, with Kier now confirmed as the construction partner.

The renovation of this 166-year-old Grade 1 listed building will feature a modern box office, an accessible entrance, a new lift, and a ground-floor bar and restroom facilities. Additionally, the renovation plans include the conservation and repair of various unique architectural elements, such as stone masonry, intricate plasterwork, and historical doors.

The redevelopment of Leeds Town Hall is designed to safeguard its essential heritage characteristics while expanding its capacity to host larger and more diverse events and performances. This initiative not only aims to enhance accessibility but also to generate significant revenue for the council and boost the local economy. Additionally, Kier is committed to implementing a robust social value program that will bring tangible benefits to the communities in and around Leeds.

Dan Doherty, regional director for Kier Construction North and Scotland said:

“We are proud to be working with Leeds City Council to refurbish the iconic Leeds Town Hall. Our highly skilled project teams have vast experience of regenerating listed buildings and we look forward to contributing to the preservation of this city centre landmark for generations to come.”

A spokesperson for Page/Park added: “We are excited to be involved in this project to inject new life into an iconic Leeds landmark. We have designed the project to respect the existing building, while inserting colourful and joyful new elements inspired by the rich colour palettes of the original interiors, as well as the vibrant nature of city.

“As a practice we are committed to careful conservation and creative adaptation of heritage buildings, and will take great care through the project to deliver a revived cultural destination that the city can be proud of.”

Opened in 1858 by Queen Victoria, Leeds Town Hall is a landmark structure in the city, crafted by the renowned architect Cuthbert Brodrick. As one of the largest town halls in the United Kingdom, it stands at an impressive 225 feet and held the title of the city’s tallest building for 108 years.

An additional component of the renovation focuses on the famed Leeds Town Hall organ. This refurbishment will enhance its acoustics, enriching the sound quality during concerts and performances. Moreover, the organ’s ornate Victorian pipes will be meticulously restored, ensuring they continue to provide a striking visual element to the majestic Victoria Hall during every event.

Councillor Salma Arif, Leeds City Council’s executive member for adult social care, active lifestyles and culture said:

“These impressive images show just how much of a difference this project will make to Leeds Town Hall and to the thousands of people who attend its eclectic programme of events each year.

“The town hall is not only a fundamental and cherished part our local history, it is also a hugely important venue for world class concerts, performances and competitions, which put the city on the international cultural stage each year and in turn generate crucial income and investment for Leeds.

“It’s important that we protect and preserve the building whilst also ensuring the facilities on offer are modern, fit for purpose and can continue to welcome audiences for many generations to come.”

The refurbishment project, slated for completion in spring 2026, aims to preserve the building’s key heritage features while making it more accessible and capable of hosting a wider range of events. This includes the creation of new facilities such as a stylish box office, an accessible entrance, and modern amenities that respect the building’s historical integrity.

Beyond its architectural and musical significance, Leeds Town Hall plays an integral role in the community. It hosts a diverse array of events, from classical music concerts and rock gigs to corporate gatherings and civic ceremonies. Each event held in its halls adds a new layer to its storied history, making the town hall a living monument to the cultural life of Leeds.

As Leeds continues to evolve, the town hall remains a symbol of the city’s past and a beacon for its future, demonstrating the enduring importance of preserving cultural landmarks not only for their historical value but also for their role in enriching the community’s contemporary life.
