Young people across Leeds are celebrating after receiving their GCSE results.
More than 9,400 Year 11 students in the city are opening their results, which, like last week’s A-levels, are expected to be comparable to those from summer 2023 on a national level. This year, marking and grading returned to the usual standards, with results based solely on students’ performances in their assessments. From 2020 to 2022, alternative assessment methods and additional safeguards were implemented due to the pandemic, resulting in a general increase in higher grades during that period.
This year, Tech Awards, which are taken alongside GCSEs in subjects like health and social care, sports studies, and IT, have been nationally strengthened. As students are completing the new versions of these qualifications for the first time, the results for this year’s awards cannot be directly compared to those of previous years.
Councillor Helen Hayden, Leeds City Council’s executive member for children and families said:
“Congratulations and well done to everyone on their GCSE results this year. Taking exams is a difficult and stressful time but students have done themselves and the city proud. These results are not only a reflection of the hard work and commitment of our young people, but also their families, schools, colleges and other learning settings that have supported them to secure these results.
“I would like to wish all our young people the very best for the future and remind everyone that support, advice and guidance is available from schools for anyone still considering their future options.”
Support is available for students who didn’t receive the results they were hoping for or are still undecided about their plans for September. Leeds City Council’s Start in Leeds platform offers information and advice on post-16 learning opportunities, allowing students to connect with local schools, colleges, and apprenticeship providers.
The Next Steps page also directs learners to the council’s Employment Hub and the Leeds Pathways team, both of which provide information, advice, and guidance to help young people navigate their next steps.
