Leeds Celebrates Its Olympic Heroes: ‘You’re our shining Stars’ is the heartfelt message from Leeds, honoring the city’s athletes for their stellar performances at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
Team GB celebrated an unforgettable 16 days of competition, bringing home a total of 65 medals. Athletes from Leeds were at the forefront of this triumph, contributing significantly to the national medal haul with their outstanding performances, much to the delight of supporters back in Yorkshire. Noteworthy among them was Tom Pidcock, who secured a gold medal in cross-country mountain biking on the third day, and Katy Marchant, who was part of the trio that clinched Great Britain’s first Olympic gold in the women’s team sprint cycling on day ten.
Other remarkable Leeds athletes included rower Georgie Brayshaw, triathletes Georgia Taylor-Brown, Sam Dickinson, and Beth Potter, gymnast Harry Hepworth, and divers Jack Laugher, Anthony Harding, and Lois Toulson, all of whom delivered memorable performances. The impressive medal tally from Leeds athletes not only highlighted the city as a hub of exceptional sporting talent but also served as a tribute to the dedication of numerous volunteers who manage community clubs and teams throughout Leeds.
Plans are currently underway for a civic reception to be held in Leeds later this year. This event will honor all local athletes who participated in the Olympics, regardless of whether they won medals, celebrating their contributions to the Games. Additionally, the reception will recognize the achievements of Leeds-based competitors in the upcoming Paralympic Games, scheduled to take place in Paris from August 28 to September 8.
The Lord Mayor of Leeds, Councillor Abigail Marshall Katung said:
“Team GB has had a magnificent medal-winning Olympics, and I’m so proud that the city of Leeds made such a glittering contribution to that success. Whether they’re from Leeds or use our superb facilities as a base for their training, every single local athlete flew the flag for the city in tremendous fashion throughout the Games.
“Their achievements have further strengthened Leeds’s reputation as a true sporting city, and I look forward to personally congratulating them, along with our equally-impressive Paralympic athletes – at the civic reception later this year.”
Additional information about the reception, including the event date which will be scheduled around the athletes’ availability, will be provided by the council in the coming days. Leeds, along with the wider Yorkshire region, boasts a remarkable track record at recent Olympic Games. Notably, at the London 2012 Olympics, Yorkshire athletes secured an impressive medal count of seven golds, two silvers, and three bronzes, outperforming entire countries like Jamaica, Spain, and Brazil.
Congratulations to all the incredible athletes of Team GB on your outstanding achievements in the recent Paris 2024 Olympic Games. Your hard work, dedication, and passion have not only earned you medals but have also inspired and uplifted the entire nation. Each of you has demonstrated exceptional skill and perseverance, and you should be immensely proud of your accomplishments.
Well done on bringing honor and pride to Great Britain.
