After a hugely successful run last year, the deer park tours at Lotherton are set to return in 2024, this time accompanied by an exciting new VIP penguin experience.
Lotherton’s Wildlife World, a conservation-focused zoo, has long been home to the beloved ‘waddle’ of Humboldt penguins. This summer, visitors have the unique opportunity to get up close and personal with these charming creatures. In the newly constructed pool, small groups of up to four guests can interact directly with penguins like Wobble and Bilbo, taking an active role in their feeding time.
After serving a fishy feast, visitors can observe the penguins’ playful antics both on land and in the water from a dedicated viewing platform. An experienced animal keeper will accompany visitors throughout the Humboldt penguin experience at Lotherton, ready to answer questions about the penguins or any other species at the site. This special experience is offered on weekends and during school holidays.
Additionally, the popular tractor tours in the estate’s deer park are returning for the school holidays. These tours take visitors among the herd in a bespoke tractor trailer, accommodating up to 30 people. Participants will have the opportunity to get close to these magnificent creatures and learn about Britain’s largest native mammal and their habitat. The tours are scheduled for every weekday and selected weekends throughout the summer holidays.
Lotherton, located in Aberford, has been a sanctuary for red deer since the 1980s, housed in a specially maintained deer park. This year, the herd is larger than ever, including many baby deer as young as 10 weeks.
Mark Scott, general estate manager at Lotherton said:
“Due to the phenomenal demand last year we have of course decided to bring the tours back for this summer. We’re pleased to be able to provide the deer tour and the penguin experience as they really provide unique and personal animal experiences that visitors just wouldn’t get otherwise.”
Councillor Mohammed Rafique, Leeds City Council’s executive member for climate, energy, environment and green space said:
“Lotherton is home to a spectacular variety of wildlife species including emus, cranes, Arthur the tapir and critically endangered Visayan warty pigs, making it a great place to visit for the whole family. Visitors can learn about these amazing animals whilst also understanding how we can each play our part in protecting and conserving both them and the natural world.
“The tours of the deer park as well as the penguin experience provide unique opportunities to visitors and we’re pleased that we can offer them. These attractions will help us generate vital funding to conserve and look after these groups of animals. Our ‘Adopt a Penguin’ scheme that we launched last year has proven very popular and we’re hoping these experiences will as well.”
Beyond its role in conservation and education, Wildlife World is a perfect destination for a family day out. With picnic areas, playgrounds, and scenic walking paths, the estate invites visitors to relax and enjoy the natural beauty around them. The park’s layout encourages exploration and discovery, making each visit a unique adventure.
